When in Rome

Buon giorno! Stanley and I are back from Rome, Italy! When we were in Rome, we went on guided tours to learn about the city of Rome, and walked around to explore local art and food. We toured Vatican City, The Colosseum and much more. Many other tourists were on vacation in Rome as well. In Rome, they speak Italian, but since there were so many tourists from America around, many waiters and shop keepers spoke English.

Italy's cusine is mostly pasta! So we ate a lot of pasta! In Italy, they eat pizza as a snack not a meal. Their pizza is different from our pizza. The pies are smaller, the crust is thinner, and there is less cheese and grease. The food in Rome was amazing. I wish I could have packed some leftovers, it was so good! Flat Stanley ate spaghetti bolognese, which is a tomato sauce with ground beef. It was delicious.

There is Ancient Rome and New Rome. We stayed in Ancient Rome. New Rome looks more like Manhattan, but with smaller buildings. Ancient Rome is filled with history. We walked through ruins that are more than 1 thousand years old! We walked past Fontana di Trevi (The Trevi Fountain). The fountain is very old, so the city of Rome was working on it when we went, so it was not filled with water. The statues on the fountain depict the story of how a girl led Roman soldiers to fresh drinking water, so that the city would have water to drink. There is a tradition of when you visit Rome, you throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain and wish to visit Rome again. This tradition was not started by Italians or even Romans. This tradition began in America! There was a famous singer in the 1930s named Frank Sinatra. He sang a song about the Trevi Fountain and him and his friends threw a coin in to wish to return to Rome. That is how the tradition began, and many tourists still throw coins into the fountain today. Stanley and I did and we hope to return to Rome again one day.
